‘Limit’, ‘cut down’, ‘quit’ are all words that can be found before the word sugar. Sugar is seen as something negative, that white crystalline substance is seen as something bad and harmful. Just as fat was once demonised, sugar is now in the spotlight of condemnation, and we’ve heard all about how bad it is. The approach to sugar seems to be all or nothing, the trend being to completely rid your life of sugar to stay fit and healthy.

Robert Lustig claims that sugar is poison, toxic and all types of bad going so far to say it has harmful effects similar to that of cocaine and tobacco. Sarah Wilson encourages others to follow in her footsteps and quit sugar through her programs. Many attribute the causes of diseases and health problems to sugar, but is this true?
Sugar is used to not only sweeten our foods, but also our lives and it is something we should enjoy. These statements and claims labelling sugar as ‘bad’ are not backed by adequate scientific research. Sugar is perfectly fine to consume in it’s natural form and if we occasionally consume that white crystalline substance, it is not the end of the world. We are fighting the wrong fight! Demonising all sugar is unnecessary and wrong. Instead of being against sugar we need to learn how to enjoy it and occasionally incorporate it into a healthy lifestyle.
